Don’t Get Left Behind at the Gate: What You Need to Know About the New REAL ID Deadline

Don’t Get Left Behind at the Gate: What You Need to Know About the New REAL ID Deadline

If you plan to travel within the United States after May 7, 2025, your standard driver’s license may no longer be enough to board a domestic flight.

After multiple delays, the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that enforcement of the REAL ID Act will begin in just a few weeks. Passed by Congress in 2005, the law sets higher security standards for state-issued identification, and beginning next month, those standards will apply at airport checkpoints nationwide.

At MissionSafe, our goal is to keep travelers informed and protected — and that includes helping you navigate important travel regulations like these. Here’s what you need to know:

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a federally compliant version of your state-issued driver’s license or ID card. You can identify it by a gold or black star on the top corner. Without one, you will not be allowed to board a domestic commercial flight or enter certain federal facilities unless you have another form of approved identification (such as a passport).

Why the Change?

The REAL ID Act was passed in the wake of 9/11 to strengthen security and ensure that all states meet minimum federal identity verification standards. Though implementation has been postponed multiple times, the May 7, 2025 deadline is now official and final.

What should you do now?

  • Check your current ID. If it doesn't have a star in the corner, it's probably not REAL ID-compliant
  • Visit your state’s DMV website to learn how to upgrade your ID. In most cases, you’ll need to bring documents that prove your identity, Social Security number, and residency.

  • Consider alternatives. A valid U.S. passport, military ID, or DHS Trusted Traveler card (like Global Entry) can also be used to fly.

For Mission Travelers

If you’re traveling internationally for mission work or leisure, you’ll still need your passport — REAL ID doesn’t replace that requirement. But for connecting domestic flights or regional conferences, having a REAL ID will soon be essential.

Our Advice: Act Early

DMVs are expected to experience higher volumes as the deadline nears. If you don’t yet have a REAL ID, we recommend starting the process as soon as possible to avoid disruptions to your travel plans.

At MissionSafe, we support your purpose-driven travel. Whether you’re heading across the globe or just across the country, we want to make sure you get there smoothly and safely.
