Safe Passage: Lessons in Global Care

When Compassion and Coverage Diverge

Q: Is the death of a friend or coworker covered by trip interruption or trip cancellation insurance?

A: Usually not. Most trip interruption and trip cancellation policies only cover events involving relationships specifically defined in the policy, such as a family member, traveling companion, or legally defined business partner. A friend, colleague, or coworker is typically not a covered relationship. In some cases, optional Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage may offer added flexibility for situations that fall outside standard covered reasons, though it should be reviewed carefully before purchase.

Scenario Snapshot

A ministry leader postpones travel after the sudden death of a close friend, only to learn that emotional hardship and professional obligation are not recognized causes for trip interruption. This case underscores how and why definitions—not intentions—govern coverage.

Narrative Summary

Just before leaving for a mission trip to Portugal, a worship pastor was hit with devastating news: a close friend and fellow church staff member had passed away unexpectedly. Faced with both personal grief and the responsibility of helping lead the funeral, she made the difficult decision to delay her trip by one day.

That decision came at a cost. She forfeited a non-refundable airline ticket and had to pay a rebooking fee, prompting the sending organization to ask MissionSafe an important question: would Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption coverage reimburse those losses? This case study shows how the answer depended on policy definitions, covered relationships, and the limits of this type of trip cancellation-focused coverage.
